Who: High school graduating children of police officers and other first responders disabled and/or killed in the line of duty
What: One time college scholarships to disabled and/or killed police officers’ and other first responders’ children (graduating high school seniors). Scholarship recipients will be selected based upon need and funding availability.
When: Scholarships will be awarded each May of the graduating year with applications for scholarships being due by the end of February of that same year. Recipients must write a 3-page essay regarding their mission and why they chose their field of study, life’s purpose and how they intend to give back to the communities in which they either live and/or work upon graduation and/or even while being a college student. They will also be required to submit a minimum of two-character references; with one being a teacher and/or principal at their high school. Applicants will be scored by a committee and will be awarded scholarships of $1,000.00 – 5,000.00. The number of applicants awarded will be determined based upon scholarship funding availability.
How: The one-time scholarship checks will be made payable directly to the college and/or university of the recipient’s selection for matriculation.
The John Kevin McWright-Powell Scholarship provides one-time college scholarships to high school seniors who are the children of police officers and first responders who were disabled or killed in the line of duty. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000, based on need and funding availability. Recipients are selected based on their essay, character references, and financial need. Scholarships are awarded each May, and applications must be submitted by the end of February of the graduating year.
All applications must be received by February 28th of the graduating year.
